The officer will make recommendations regarding the use of current and future social media channels. And will serve as one of BIRN’s key representatives in its regional social media outreach.

Major duties and responsibilities

  • Organise PR campaign around BIRN's 10 year anniversary in coordination with local social media officers.
  • Plan and coordinate social media campaigns across several platforms including, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and other platforms.
  • Create and publish content for several platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and other platforms.
  • Maintain and systematically grow BIRN Hub’s current on-line community across all platforms.
  • Identify and recruit influencers and create conversations around issues related to BIRN Hub’s mission and keep the on-line community engaged in dynamic, interactive and meaningful ways.
  • Along with other BIRN Hub team members design and coordinate multi-channel social media strategy and campaigns with the aim of breaking down complexities of issues and humanizing BIRN Hub’s voice.
  • Provide updates and reviews to Hub management on status of social media activities and campaigns. Conduct regular analyses of social media engagement and conversions and of effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Keep track of trends and activities initiative by other non-profit organizations and competitors.
  • Work with Hub project managers to develop a weekly and monthly content management plan.
  • Identify new opportunities to continually improve the social media presence to engage supporters and nurture them into followers.
  • Liaise and work with graphic designers as needed, to produce visuals and info graphics for use in social media campaigns.
  • Provide reports to management on the amount and quality of content being created and provide recommendations on what can be done to improve our on-line presence.
  • Support other teams and country offices in the development of joint social media initiatives.

Specific Tasks

  • Create standards and strategy for Hub media outlets and projects and implement them.
  • Work with various teams within the Hub programmes/projects and coordinate BIRN regional team to gain appropriate input on social networking initiatives and strategies.
  • Serve as content coordinator for BIRN Hub’s social media sites including LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook (and other platforms as needed).
  • Working with the social media officers from the region, monitor trends in social media tools and applications and appropriately apply that knowledge to increasing and improve the use of social media.
  • Obtain appropriate Hub management approval for all social networking initiatives.
  • Ensure that all social networking strategies are compliant with brand regulations and social media guidelines.
  • Coordinate integration of efforts among internal and external partners.
  • Work to ensure consistency across all social media platforms.
  • Stay informed about new social media sites, platforms and emerging technologies.
  • Advise on matters related to content and overall user experience of social media sites.
  • Help refine and grow content on social media platforms.
  • Help create training materials and guidelines, as necessary.
  • Deliver training sessions for social media officers, journalists and project managers network wide, with the aim of creating a unified approach to BIRN regional social media presence.

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum three years of experience in social media, marketing and/or (youth) engagement, in particular with social media tools and platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
  • Experience in implementing social media strategies for non-profit organizations and/or private sector companies and tracking their success and analysing results is essential.
  • Experience sourcing and managing content development and publishing for social networking functions.
  • Ability to integrate PR/communications initiatives with social media marketing.
  • Understand and can utilize emerging platforms and social media measurement tools including: HootSuite, Tweetdeck, Klout, Buffer, etc.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives and priorities within specified timeframes.
  • Proven ability to present and communicate new projects to a varied audience.
  • Proven skills in communication, networking, strategic thinking, advocacy, negotiation.
  • Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas as well as transfer knowledge and skills.
  • Strong writing and communication skills and the aptitude to handle competing messages and priorities with multiple audiences, including experience in writing for the web.
  • Experience in reporting on qualitative and quantitative analytics.
  • A strong understanding of BIRN’s outputs, programmes and policy, including commercialization of editorial outputs, as well as sound interpretation and judgment to present these outputs, programmes and policies in a way that enhances BIRN’s image.
  • Bachelor Degree in social science, marketing, journalism, international affairs or communication.
  • Fluent in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) and English.
